About the Juror

Jack Burnham, internationally recognized art critic, scholar and author served as this year's juror for the annual Outdoor Sculpture Competition.

Professor Burnham attended the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Wentworth Institute before receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University in 1961. From 1962 to 1983, he taught at Northwestern University and is presently Professor of Art History at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is a past recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Critic's Award from the Chicago Art Awards. His writings appear in numerous national art publications including Art in America, The New Art Examiner, Artscene, Arts Magazine, and the Journal of Art Education. The author of three books, Structure in Art, Beyond Modern Sculpture, and The Great Saltworks, Professor Burnham is currently working on a multi-volume book concerned with the narrative and art semiotics in painting since Giotto.

Appalachian State University's annual Outdoor Sculpture Competition, now in its third year, is made possible through the patronage of Martin and Doris Rosen. The Rosens continue to be a major force contributing to the success of An Appalachian Summer and cultural programming at Appalachian State University.

The sculpture competition, on view year round at the Appalachian State University campus, is a dynamic component of the visual arts on campus. Martin and Doris Rosen provide each of the ten selected sculptors with a five hundred dollar honorarium to facilitate their individual works. From the ten participants, one artist's work is then selected to receive the Rosen Prize, a cash award of five thousand dollars.
