Exhibition Guidelines

The following information is current as of the 24th Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition (2010-2011).

  1. The 24th Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition is open to artists currently residing in the US, and 18 years of age or older. Ten completed works will be chosen for installation on Appalachian's campus and will be exhibited from April 2010 until March 2011. Works entered must have been completed within the last three years and not previously exhibited at Appalachian. Artists exhibited in previous Rosen Competitions are not eligible to enter again for three years. Previous recipients of the Martin and Doris Rosen Award are not eligible to enter again for five years.
  2. Sculptures must be completed and ready for installation. Sculptors may enter a maximum of three completed works (the artist may submit two views of three works for a total of six images). All works entered must have been completed within the last three years and not previously exhibited at Appalachian. Images of maquettes and models are not eligible for consideration. Ten completed works will be selected for exhibition, however, the competition may choose to exhibit more than one work from an artist, with no additional honorarium available. The artist reserves the right to decline this request.
  3. The selected works are to be exhibited on the campus of Appalachian from April 2010 through March 2011. Sculptures are loaned for the time specified above and will not be returned until said period is completed unless prior arrangements have been made with the Program Director.
  4. Work must be suitable for outdoor installation and must:
    1. be structurally secured to concrete pad or plaza with anchor bolts or similar devices;
    2. be capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions including high winds, below zero temperatures, heavy rain, snow, ice, and storms, etc...);
    3. be able to withstand a high traffic, university environment;
    4. be able to take into consideration the safety of the audience; and
    5. be relatively maintenance free during the exhibition period.
    Works not following the above criteria will not be considered for installation on Appalachian's campus.
  5. Artists are provided a unique opportunity to interact with Appalachian students and surrounding community through a special installation celebration. Artists will participate in a round-table discussion on Thursday, April 15th, 2010 followed by an artist's reception, with installations beginning on April 16th. Sculptors must be available to participate in this event and are required to install their sculptures during the dates of April 15-17th, 2009. Artists unable to meet the scheduled installation requirements are not eligible for participation and honorarium will be forfeited. The artists will be responsible for the delivery of the works to and from Appalachian. Artists will be responsible for the removal of all sculptures during March 2011. The competition will supply equipment and installation and de-installation assistance by experienced staff and students in securing the works on site. Lodging will be provided for both the installation and de-installation visits.
  6. The Juror will announce the winner of the Martin and Doris Rosen Award on July 24th, 2010 during the Rosen Walk as part of An Appalachian Summer Festival. The Juror will review all the works on-site before making the final selection. Upon accepting this award the recipient agrees to return to Appalachian for a weeklong residency within Appalachian's Department of Art during the 2010-2011 academic year. Lodging and a $500 residency stipend will be provided in addition to the cash award for the named Rosen Award Winner.
  7. The Rosen Sculpture Competition reserves the right to photograph any submitted work for publicity, promotion and archive purposes.
  8. Sales are encouraged as the program has a history of sales to private and corporate collections. All sales are subject to 40% gallery commission.
  9. Notice of Liability: All reasonable care and precaution will be taken in the handling, and storing of materials submitted for this competition. Appalachian State University and the Rosen Sculpture Competition will provide insurance for the borrowed object(s) for the duration of the object's stay on Appalachian's campus, provided that the chosen sculpture(s) meets all requirements stated in section four (4) above and that sculptor has completed all appropriate paperwork supplied by the staff. Insurance will not cover damage to the artwork due to poor construction or craftspersonship while creating work or during shipping. Insurance will not cover any materials used in the fabrication of a sculpture that is intended for deterioration or non-traditional material not intended for exterior use. A certificate of insurance will be provided upon request.
  10. Participation in the entry process constitutes a full understanding and acceptance of the conditions set forth above.
