Exhibition Guidelines

The following information is current as of the 22nd Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition (2008-2009).

  1. The 22nd Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition is open to artists currently residing in the US, and 18 years of age and older. Nine completed works and one site-specific artist will be chosen for installation on ASU's campus and will be exhibited from April 2008 until March 2009. Works entered must have been completed within the last three years and not previously exhibited at ASU. Artists exhibited in previous Rosen exhibitions are not eligible to enter again for three years. Previous recipients of the Martin and Doris Rosen Award are not eligible to enter again for five years. Sculptors may choose from two categories to enter their work: Completed Works OR Site-Specific Category.

    • Completed Works Category: This category includes sculptures that have been previously completed and are ready for installation. Sculptors may enter a maximum of three completed works in this category (The artist may submit two views of three works for a total of six images). All works entered must have been completed within the last three years and not previously exhibited at ASU. Images of maquettes and models are not eligible for consideration. Nine completed works will be selected for exhibition, however, the competition may choose to exhibit more than one work from an artist, with no additional honorarium available. The artist reserves the right to decline this request.
    • Site-Specific Category: Site-Specific artists may enter images for a maximum of three, site-specific works that have been previously created by the artist and are indicative of the artist's style of creation and exhibits the ability to create an effective site-specific work. (The artist may submit two views of three works for a total of six images). Site-Specific proposals will not be considered for the jury process. The artist accepted for the Site-Specific Category is subject to the same submission deadline as the Completed Works artists, however, they will be asked to adhere to a separate set of requirements and deadlines to allow for extra planning and extended installation schedule. The Rosen Competition has declared that at least one site, upon receipt of an accepted proposal, will be reserved for a site-specific work. The Rosen Competition will provide guidance, installation assistance, lodging during installation and de-installation, and an additional materials budget in addition to the $1,000 honorarium. Upon acceptance for this category, the artist will be required to visit ASU's campus to choose a site, design an initial proposal, create a preliminary project budget and meet with the staff of the Competition, the ASU Grounds Office and the ASU Safety Office. The Rosen Competition will offer support for travel and lodging for this initial visit. The Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition and ASU reserve the right to decline any or all site-specific proposals for works deemed unsafe or unfit for the ASU campus. Failure to submit a proposal approved by the Program Director, Grounds Office, and Safety Office results in forfeiture of the honorarium. Only items #3, #5, #6 below apply to this category. The time schedule specified in item #4 below will not apply to the Site-Specific artist. It is suggested that artists interested in the Site-Specific Category contact the Program Director for additional information and support, or visit the Site-Specific FAQ.
  2. The selected works are to be exhibited on the campus of ASU from April 2008 through March 2009. Sculptures are loaned for the time specified above and will not be returned until said period is completed unless prior arrangements have been made with the Program Director.
  3. Work must be suitable for outdoor installation and must:

    1. be structurally secured to concrete pad or plaza with anchor bolts or similar devices;
    2. be capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions (high winds, below zero temperatures, heavy rain, snow, ice storms, etc.);
    3. be able to withstand a high traffic, university environment;
    4. take into consideration the safety of the audience; and
    5. be relatively maintenance free during the exhibition period.
    Works not following this criteria will not be considered for installation.
  4. Artists are provided a unique opportunity to interact with the ASU students and surrounding community through a special installation celebration. Artists will present their work to the public on Thursday, April 17th, 2008 followed by an artist's reception. Sculptors must be available to participate in this event and are required to install their sculptures during the dates of April 18-19th, 2008. Artists will be responsible for the removal of all sculptures during March 2009. The competition will supply equipment and installation and deinstallation assistance by experienced staff and students, in securing the works on site. Lodging will be provided for both the installation and de-installation visits. The artists will be responsible for the delivery of the works to and from ASU. Artists unable to meet the scheduled installation requirements are not eligible for participation within the Completed Works Category.
  5. The Juror will announce the winner of the Martin and Doris Rosen Award on July 26th, 2008 during the Rosen Walk as part of An Appalachian Summer Festival. The Juror will review all the works on-site before making the final selection. Upon accepting this award the recipient agrees to return to ASU for a weeklong residency within ASU's Department of Art during the 2008-2009 academic year. Lodging and a $500 residency stipend will be provided in addition to the cash award for the named Rosen Award Winner.
  6. Liability: While all reasonable care and precaution will be taken in the handling and assisting in the installation of the sculptures, ASU and the Appalachian State University Foundation, Inc. will not be responsible for the loss of or damage to any entry, nor liability for the artist. The Rosen Sculpture staff will not alter or change the condition of the sculptures during the exhibition in any way except with written instructions from the artist. If damage to the sculpture occurs, the artist will be notified immediately. The competition advises all artists to insure artwork as the University does not insure these outdoor works. This includes damage to the sculptures and liability for the artist. The Rosen Competition reserves the right to photograph any sculpture for documentation, education and publicity purposes.
